1. Do this now: Register for Hilton’s Q4 promotion for 2,500 bonus points on every stay between September 3 and December 31.
  2. Do this now: Link your Virgin Atlantic account to your Virgin Red account on the Virgin Red account page for 4,000 bonus points, which you’ll receive via an emailed code after linking.
  3. The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select personal card has a heightened offer for 75,000 AA miles after $3,500 spend in four months and the annual fee is waived for the first year too.

Citi makes it easier than a lot of banks to pay your bill in less orthodox ways.
  4. American Express has a targeted upgrade offer for Business Green to Business Gold cards with 70,000 Membership Rewards after $10,000 spend in three months. Assuming you can hit that spend in 4x categories, that’ll net you 11x on $10,000 spend. (Thanks to joghi)
  5. The Citi Shop Your Way Rewards card, the Yusuf Dikec of credit cards, has sent new, targeted spending offers for August for online spend. We’ve seen:

    – 200,000 Shop Your Way Rewards points with $750 spend
    – $70 statement credit after $1,000 spend
    – $50 statement credit after $750 spend
    – $30 statement credit after $500 spend

For the first time in forever, there’ll be music, there’ll be light Citi is now showing (some) registered offers on the Offers tab after logging in; in my case, two of four are showing, which is divide by zero times more than before. (Thanks to con_man101, Brandon F, Jon, and Ben)
  6. The RebatesMe shopping portal has a new member cash back bonus of $40 for new accounts that spend $10 or more through the portal in the first year. Rather than signing up directly on the site though, use a friend’s referral and they’ll earn $45 if you earn more than $10 in cash back in the first 90 days. Lots of numbers there, right?

Typically RebatesMe requires only a new email address for sign-up, but may also do phone number text verification for redemption. (Thanks to FM)

Have a nice weekend friends!

Friendly weekend activities reminder.

  1. Office Depot / OfficeMax has $15 off of $300 or more in Visa gift cards running through Saturday. For best results:

    – Link your cards to Dosh
    – Buy even multiples of $300 in a transaction
    – Try for multiple transactions back-to-back
    – Bring your favorite cashier a gourmet cookie or a box of donuts

These are Pathward gift cards. (Thanks to Jim)
  2. The Citi Shop Your Way Rewards Mastercard sent new widely targeted offers for spend at utilities. Because it’s Citi and because this card has its province in Sears, it’s slightly complicated:

    – Minimum utility spend for a bonus: $400-$600
    – 5%-20% cash back
    – Maximum utility spend for a bonus: -$625-$800
    – Good once a month for August, September, and October

This stacks with mid-July online spend offers too, provided your utility takes payments online. (Thanks to Brandon F and birt)
  3. Discover has 15% off of Apple gift cards when redeemed using your cash back balance through the end of August.
  4. New American Express Delta no-lifetime language (NLL) card links were shared. These seem to be from a mailer and are name locked on the personal side, but the business cards aren’t name locked:

    – Delta Business Gold: 90,000 miles after $6,000 spend in six months
    – Delta Business Platinum: 100,000 miles after $8,000 spend in six months
    – Delta Business Reserve: 125,000 miles after $12,000 spend in six months

Make sure you’re comfortable with the risk of using a targeted mailer’s links. Because you didn’t ask, my personal opinion is that the risk is very low, especially compared to other AmEx shenanigans. But, no one should take my advice about anything, ever. (Thanks to DDG)

More advice that you shouldn’t take.

EDITOR’S NOTE: I’ve been out of the country for a couple of weeks, but I’m now back. I tried to keep up on responding but fell woefully behind. I’ll do my best to catch-up by the end of the week though.

  1. Do this now: Check for 20,000 bonus Membership Rewards for enrolling your American Express charge cards (Green, Gold, or Platinum) into Pay Over Time. Then, set a reminder to shut off Pay Over time in 121 days.

If you get the bonus offer on multiple cards, consider activating them in separate tabs as simultaneously as possible because reasons.
  2. Do this now: Add all of your Chase Sapphire and Freedom cards to your Instacart account for free Instacart+ membership, each card adds more time, and you use the same landing page each time too. You won’t be able to do this after tomorrow.
  3. Rakuten In-Store has 1-3x Membership Rewards or 1-3% cash back at Lowe’s with a linked card. Goose the offer with the Citi Shop Your Way Rewards card’s monthly home improvement credit too.

The terms say this doesn’t work with gift cards, but we all know that’s probably not true because reasons.
  4. OfficeDepot / Office Max stores have $15 off of $300 or more in Mastercard gift cards through Saturday. For best results:

    – Link your cards to Dosh
    – Try for multiple transactions back-to-back
    – Buy even multiples of $300

    These are Pathward gift cards.
  5. Hilton for Business members earn double elite night credits for both business and leisure stays through the end of 2024. You can register for Hilton for Business and link your accounts here if you haven’t already done so. (Thanks to LoyaltyLobby)
  6. The American Express Business Gold card has a 200,000 Membership Rewards sign-up bonus after $15,000 in spend available by referrals only. Different cards from the referrer can have different bonuses, so check them all because reasons.

Commemorative summer coffee mug; presented because reasons.

  1. The Citi Shop Your Way Mastercard has new mid-month targeted spending offers for online spend:

    – 200,000 Shop Your Way Rewards after $1,000
    – 250,000 Shop Your Way Rewards after $1,000
    – $30 statement credit after $500
    – $50 statement credit after $750
    – $70 statement credit after $1,000

These offers stack with other ongoing offers leading to $350+ in statement credits monthly for many. Sure the sign-up bonus sucks, but that’s not what this card is about. If only giftcards.com, this offer, and the next news item could form some kind of holy trifecta. (Thanks to Justin O, Dave 37, and birt)
  2. Two airline portals have back-to-school shopping portal bonuses for cumulative spend through August 12, which is an extremely long time for a shopping portal.

Southwest Rapid Rewards : 2,000 miles after $500 spend
United MileagePlus Shopping: 2,500 miles after $600 spend

Likely Alaska and American will have similar bonuses later this week, and Delta won’t because they don’t believe in holy trifectas (according to sources that I just made up).
  3. American Express Offers has several new airline offers:

    – 30,000 Membership Rewards with $2,000+ spend at ITA Airways through September 30
    – $300 statement credit with $2,000+ spend at Virgin Atlantic through September 16

Normally these are semi-gameable, but ITA is particularly hard to deal with so caveat emptor. (Thanks to Connor and DoC)
  4. The Chase IHG Premier One Business card has a heightened sign-up bonus of 200,000 points after $9,000 spend in six months, and the $99 annual fee is not waived for the first year. The card also gives $50 in United Travel Bank credit annually, so I’d consider that part of the sign-up bonus too.

We talked about an IHG devaluation last week and now that the dust has settled, the point value should probably be taken as somewhere between 0.45 cpp and 0.85 cpp, or even more if you have the IHG Select card for it’s 10% rebate and you book flexible rates.

Have a nice Tuesday!

The other holy trifecta.

  1. The US Bank Triple Cash Rewards card has a $750 sign-up bonus after $6,000 spend in 180 days. The card has no-annual fee, or a negative annual fee if you’re a gamer. A few US Bank notes:

    – Hard pulls with US Bank will be combined in the same day
    – Different businesses can get the same card on the same day
    – The Leverage card pairs well with this one, and also has a $750 bonus

For more about US Bank gaming, see this article.
  2. The American Express Schwab 1.1 cents per Membership Rewards point cash-out will be limited to the first million points per year starting October 1. Afterward, points will be cashed out at 0.8 cents each.

You’ll still, as of this writing, have uncapped cash-out with the Morgan Stanley Platinum card at 1.0 cents, and American Express’s Business Checking cash-out is also at 1.0 cents each. Of course, brokers gonna broke and bypass the whole system. Mini #rant brewing for the near future. (Thanks to DDG and jnjustice)
  3. Do this now (if you hold a United credit card): Check for a targeted spend bonus for spend through July 30. Offers include TravelBank credit, PQPs, and miles.
  4. Do this now (if you hold United or Marriott status): Register for Marriott and United’s reciprocal earning promotion for stays or premium cabin flights:

Marriott registration link (For Ambassador, Titanium, or Unobtainium status)
United registration link (For Gold, Platinum, 1K, Global Services, or Moon Walkers)

If you haven’t linked your United status to Marriott, you can link here, and vice-versa here. (Thanks to FM)
  5. The AirFrance / KLM FlyingBlue program has promo awards from the US to Europe in the following cities through the end of July: Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, and Raleigh Durham. There’s wide economy availability for the promotion, and spotty 50,000 point business class availability too.
  6. The Citi Shop Your Way Rewards Mastercard, the Larry Bird of credit cards, sent a few targeted offers:

    – 10% statement credit on up to $1,000 in travel and entertainment, monthly in 2024
    – $150 statement credit with $1,000-$1,999 in spend or $250 with $2,000+ at gas, grocery, and restaurants, monthly in 2024

These offers stack together and with other ongoing offers from the card. If you maximized just these two, you’ve got [launches massively parallel calculation on a supercomputer] $2,100 in statement credits on a no-annual fee card. If your favorite credit card blogger never talks bout this card, ask yourself “why not?” (Thanks to Tyler, Jay, and Fish)
  7. Virgin Atlantic devalued its transatlantic business class Delta partner awards in two ways, first with approximately $1,000 in new surcharges and second, an increase of up to 55% mileage redemption cost with the introduction of a new variable award chart.
  8. The Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles Visa card has been unveiled in the US:

    – 40,000 bonus miles after $3,000 spend in 90 days
    – 2x on dining, groceries, entertainment, and hotels
    – $99 annual fee, not waived the first year.

I think the card is only interesting because it is issued by First Electronic Bank. When a bank you’ve never heard of issues a card, it’s usually a green light for shenanigans because (1) their systems are different than big bank systems, (2) smaller banks usually have interesting payment methods, and (3), if you’re shutdown by First Electronic Bank, literally who cares?

Warning sign posted at First Electric Bank’s headquarters isn’t the least bit creepy, why would you say that?

  1. Do this now: Register for Q3 credit card bonus categories, for spend between July 1 and September 30:

Discover IT: 5% back at Walmart and grocery stores, up to $1,500 spend
Citi Dividend: 5x on gas, up to $6,000 spend annually
US Bank Cash+: Select 5% and 2% categories, up to $2,000 spend on 5%
Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex: 5x on gas, EV charging, live entertainment, and movie theaters, up to $1,500

Q3 is full of soft-balls for hitting spend, both for online floosie spenders and for in-person spenders. Take the Speedway to Walmart Neighborhood Market for the quickest route on the latter.
  2. Chase Ultimate Rewards has a 20% transfer bonus to Air Canada’s Aeroplan program through July 31. This is a good bonus if you’re booking Star Alliance awards, but like a seasoned manufactured spender views deals worth less than $100, it feels a bit 🤏 compared to the recent Bilt 150% transfer bonus.
  3. The Citi Shop Your Way Rewards card, alternatively named the “5% of a lawyer’s annual salary in bonuses” card, sent mid-month spending bonuses on Saturday. We’ve seen:

    – 200,000 points after $750 in online spend
    – $50 statement credit after $750 in online spend
    – $70 statement credit after $1,000 in online spend

For the first time since last June, I didn’t receive a mid-month spend bonus, so I’m officially declaring a nationwide state of June-gloom. (Thanks to MS Ninja, birt, and Adam)
  4. Most American Express Delta cards have increased sign-up bonuses that are at a relatively local maxima, but the bonus is still not amazing compared to historical versions so they haven’t shown up here. However, one card bucks the trend:

The American Express Delta Gold has a $500 statement credit and 40,000 SkyMiles after $3,000 spend in three months, and the annual fee is waived for the first year offer that shows up during on the checkout page of a (dummy) flight booking. In this case, it’s probably an all-time best bonus, but unfortunately it’s not available via referrals and I doubt it’ll show up there too. (Thanks to AbjectRaise)
  5. The Barclays AAdvantage Aviator card has a 70,000 AA mile bonus after making a single purchase and paying the $99 annual fee payment in the first 90 days.

There’s also a targeted 60,000 miles + 10,000 miles for the referred and an additional 10,000 miles for the referrer offer floating around for those operating in Mario+Luigi (two player) mode. (Thanks to DDG)

MEAB pouts.

  1. American Express’s promotion for 10x on dining for up to $25,000 in three months for the referrer after referring someone else to AmEx ends on Wednesday. To make this last a little longer, remember AmEx referral hacks:

    – One 10x bonus per account number
    – Referral links saved before Wednesday will have the 10x bonus attached even if the referred applies for the card after Wednesday This didn’t work
    – If the referred is denied on first application but later approved after reconsideration, the 10x bonus will activate for the referrer, even after the expiration

Combine several of the above to extend 10x even further, and remember you can always chat with American Express to confirm that a referral bonus is attached after three days.
  2. Giftcards.com has new codes for 10% off of $100 Visa egift cards. Codes to try:

    VISASUMMER10
    SUMMERVISA10
    SUMMER10

These codes don’t appear on major shopping portals so probably won’t payout, but you miss all the shots you don’t take. If you’re having tracking issues with this site, see this post and also note that all Safari desktop transactions may also currently not track with giftcards.com.

These are Pathward cards. Several online liquidation channels for these dried up in the last couple of weeks, but there’s always a play and there’s always Kiva as a last resort if you don’t have other options.
  3. The Citi Shop Your Way Rewards Mastercard sent out mid-month offers late last week, we’ve seen:

    – 200,000 Shop Your Way Rewards points for $750+ in online shopping
    – 250,000 Shop Your Way Rewards points for $1,000+ in online shopping
    – $70 statement credit for $1,000+ in online shopping
    – $50 statement credit for $750+ in online shopping
    – 10,000 ThankYou Points with $1,000+ in online shopping

(Thanks to MVC, Brandon F, irieriley, and Brooke)
  4. Giant, Stop & Shop, and Martins stores have 10x points on Uber and airbnb gift cards through Thursday, limit $2,000 per account. Of course with Pepper Rewards you can get effectively the same deal from home, but probably only for a couple more weeks.
  5. American Express offers has $300 back on $750 or more at Holland America through August 31. (Thanks to FM)
  6. In case you’re wondering how bad the Ultra Low Cost Carrier (ULCC) airlines are doing at meeting the current traveling public’s needs, two pieces of news will tell you: (1) On Friday Frontier eliminated change fees on non-basic economy tickets and added Euro-Business style blocked middle seats on some tickets. Then this weekend, (2) Spirit eliminated both change fees and cancellation fees on all tickets.

Of course, you could look at Frontier’s earnings or Spirit’s earnings for Q1 2024 earnings and see it in number form. [Spoiler alert] They’re both great at losing money, and they’re both good at using accounting tricks to make the losses look less grave.

ULCC post-COVID economic models in a nutshell.

  1. Rakuten’s In-Store card linked program has new offers for may:

    – Lowes: 3% cash back or 3x Membership Rewards
    – Food Lion: 1% cash back or 1x Membership Rewards

Neither offer lists a maximum transaction size, and both offers have to be re-added to your card an hour after use. Both expire in 75 days, and both stack well with the current typhoon of Citi Shop Your Way Rewards spend bonuses. (Thanks to Doug)
  2. AirFrance / KLM FlyingBlue has released its May promo rewards. US cities include:

    – Los Angeles
    – Austin
    – Minneapolis

There’s good availability in economy for 15,000 miles each way out of all of these cities, and there’s some spotty business class availability from Minneapolis for 50,000 miles this summer. Unfortunately for everyone involved, summer is about the only time that Minneapolis has better weather than much of Europe.
  3. Chase’s increased Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve sign-up bonuses became available in branch on Sunday, and they’re available online now too:

Sapphire Preferred: 75,000 bonus points after $4,000 spend in 3 months
Sapphire Reserve: 75,000 bonus points after $4,000 spend in 3 months

Neither is available via referral yet, but I’d wait a week or two if timing isn’t critical because they’ll likely soon be available for a referral bonus too. You could get both with a Modified Double Dip, but I’d strongly prefer pairing a Sapphire Reserve with an Ink Preferred for more net points and better cash-out options.

Have a nice weekend friends!

The other Chase MDD: MEAB Double Dip.
