You can get your weird Bonvoy and Delta hidden value fake posts elsewhere I&#8217;m sure. #sorrynotsorry<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The General Rule<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Points and miles held in loyalty programs are a real asset, even if <a href=\"https:\/\/milesearnandburn.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/14\/tuesday-wisdom-devaluations-redux\/\">they&#8217;re worth less over time (even worse than holding cash<\/a>). If a loyalty program member passes away, most programs&#8217; terms and conditions forfeit the value of their loyalty account completely and the account is (in theory) effectively worthless. So as a general rule, when you or another player dies, remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Don&#8217;t tell the loyalty program when a member passes, rather just cash-out or redeem points as quickly as reasonably practical.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Nuance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The general rule doesn&#8217;t apply everywhere, not every program has blanket forfeiture. The US exceptions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alaska has an unofficial &#8220;Memorial Miles&#8221; process to transfer, contact customer service<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com\/i18n\/aadvantage-program\/aadvantage-terms-and-conditions.jsp\">AA may transfer miles to someone else for a fee<\/a> at its own discretion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.united.com\/en\/us\/fly\/mileageplus\/rules.html\">United may transfer miles to someone else for a fee<\/a> at its own discretion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyatt.com\/help\/terms\/world-of-hyatt\">Hyatt will transfer points to a person with the same residential address<\/a> as the deceased<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hilton.com\/modules\/assets\/documents\/Hilton-Honors-Worldwide-LLC-Death-Transfer-Affidavit-0628.pdf\">Hilton will transfer points, just fill out this form<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.marriott.com\/s\/article\/marriott-deceased-member-account\">Marriott will transfer points to the deceased\u2019s spouse or someone named in the will<\/a> at its own discretion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihg.com\/content\/us\/en\/customer-care\/member-tc.html\">IHG will transfer points<\/a>, contact customer service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Its &#8220;own discretion&#8221; shows up a lot there, I&#8217;d consider whether you really want to trust <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/awardtravel\/comments\/11xl2up\/was_anyone_who_was_shut_down_by_aa_able_to_get\/\">Toby&#8217;s<\/a> discretion before moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Practical Side<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>None of the loyalty programs that transfer points will transfer elite status, upgrade certificates, club access awards, tier awards, elite qualifying points, or similar, and each of these things has value, potentially thousands of tens of thousands of dollars worth.
