{"id":11785,"date":"2025-05-09T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milesearnandburn.com\/?p=11785"},"modified":"2025-05-09T00:05:43","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T06:05:43","slug":"weekend-slump-courtesy-of-american-express","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milesearnandburn.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/09\/weekend-slump-courtesy-of-american-express\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend Slump, Courtesy of American Express"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>American Express had several big waves of shutdowns yesterday in addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/milesearnandburn.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/30\/wednesday-dump-credit-card-bonuses-american-express-shutdowns-southwest-updates-gift-cards-on-sale-and-fuel-points\/\">the its ongoing, nearly daily smaller batch<\/a> of shutdowns at least partially related to <a href=\"https:\/\/milesearnandburn.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/01\/wish-it-was-the-weekend-wisdom-american-express-payments-and-shutdowns\/\">foreign buyer&#8217;s group behavior<\/a>. Based on discussion with and datapoints from those affected, yesterday&#8217;s reasons appear to be:<br><br>&#8211; Round two of floosies missed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/milesearnandburn.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/18\/lessons-from-the-big-axe-american-express-2025-edition\/\">the first American Express Big Axe<\/a>, even if they cut out their floosie lifestyle in February<br>&#8211; Accounts with big spend at international merchants and or with charges in multiple states simultaneously<br>&#8211; Holders with multiple large, missed payments<br><br>It feels to me like American Express is trying to de-risk its accountholder portfolio and extraneous, abnormal behaviors aren&#8217;t as safe as they have been historically. I know nothing about anything, but assuming that&#8217;s true, lowering your balances with American Express every single day probably can&#8217;t hurt.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The American Express Platinum brokerage cards have increased sign-up bonuses, and you can have both provided you have the right underlying brokerage accounts:<br><br>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schwab.com\/public\/schwab\/investing\/accounts_products\/credit_cards?ENTRY_POINT=IIAH\">Schwab<\/a>: 125,000 Membership Rewards after $8,000 spend in six months<br>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/apply.americanexpress.com\/amex-morgan-stanley-credit-cards\/?page_url=1\">Morgan Stanley<\/a>: 150,000 Membership Rewards after $8,000 spend in six months<br><br>The Schwab&#8217;s best use is cashing out Membership Rewards at 1.1 cents per point, and Morgan Stanley&#8217;s is cashing out at 1.0 cents per point and giving the cardholder a free Platinum authorized user card with lounge access.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Starting on June 7, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyatt.com\/help\/terms\/world-of-hyatt\">Hyatt will only allow 10 incoming awards (like Guest of Honor, Club Access, Suite Upgrade Awards, etc.)<\/a> from another member per year. <br \/><br \/>Apropos of nothing, last I heard it was still possible to have more than one email address.<br \/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com\/i18n\/aadvantage-program\/aadvantage-status\/aadvantage-status-match.jsp\">AA has a limited time heightened status match for JetBlue elites<\/a> through June 30:<br \/><br \/>&#8211; JetBlue Mosaic 1 matches to AA Platinum<br \/>&#8211; JetBlue Mosaic 2 matches to AA Platinum Pro<br \/>&#8211; JetBlue Mosaic 3 and 4 match to AA Executive Platinum<br \/><br \/>These are instant matches that last four months, and you can retain the matches with flight activity. How much activity?
